元朝中叶的时候，传奇人物江南富豪沈万三的父亲沈佑，搬到了周庄东面的东宅村居住，他以经商为业，也使得东宅村开始繁荣，以富安桥为中心的旧集镇也形成了。
周庄由原来的小集镇迅速发展为商业大镇，这与沈万三的发迹很有关系。
沈万三十分具有商业头脑，他看到东江具备西接京杭大运河，东北接浏河的地理优势，于是决定出海贸易，将周庄变成了一个粮食、丝绸及多种手工业品的集散地和交易中心，促使周庄的手工业和商业得到了迅猛的发展。
到了清朝的时候，周庄人口急剧增加，西栅一带逐渐发展出很多酒肆商铺，中市街便成了周庄的商业中心，这时的周庄俨然是一个江南大镇了。
周庄是一个既传统，又现代的地方。
到了现代社会，周庄依然保留着自己的那份古色古香，全镇一大半的民居仍保留着明清时期的建筑风格，古镇不大，仅0.47平方公里。
但就在这不大的古镇里，却有近百座古典宅院和60多个砖雕门楼。
其中，最有代表性的就是沈厅、张厅。
同时，周庄还保存了14座各具特色的古桥，它们共同构造了一幅美妙的“小桥、流水、人家”的水乡风景画。

Dear tourist, welcome to the beautiful Zhouzhuang Old Town. Let Little Donkey spend the rest of the day with you. The legendary Zhouzhuang is situated in the southeast of Suzhou city and the southwest of Kunshan city. It is one of the six ancient towns in Jiangnan and it is honored as the most famous water township in China which has a history of more than 900 years. During the middle period of the Yuan Dynasty, there is a legendary and rich figure in Jiangnan named Shen Wansan. His father Shen You moved to Dongzhai Village which was located in the east of Zhouzhuang. Shen You ran business, and developed the economy of the village. Therefore, Dongzhai Village became prosperous and the market centered on Fuan Bridge came into being. The affluence of Shen Wansan contributed a lot to the transition of Zhouzhuang from a small town to a commercial and prosperous place. Shen Wansan is gifted in doing business. He found that the East River was superior in geography because it bordered on the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal in west and Liu River in southeast, so he decided to do marine trade. With his arduous effort, Zhouzhuang became a trading and distributing center of food, silk and various handicrafts, facilitating the development of its handicraft industry and business. By the Qing Dynasty, with the population of Zhouzhuang growing rapidly, many bars and shops appeared in the West Gate area. Therefore, Zhongshi Street became the business center of Zhouzhuang, making Zhouzhuang a commercial and prosperous place. Zhouzhuang is a place with both traditional and modern elements. Now in the modern time, Zhouzhuang still retains its own quaintness and most of the houses keep the architectural style of Qing Dynasty. Only covered an area of 0.47 square kilometer, the old town is not very large, but there are about one hundred old-fashioned courtyards and more than 60 tile-craving arches in it. Among those architectures, the most representative ones are the Shen’s House and the Zhang’s House. Zhouzhuang also keeps 14 characteristic ancient bridges. All these things constitute a wonderful water township scenery with little bridge, flowing river and household. Featuring with beauty, quaintness and simplicity, Zhouzhaung, a famous town in Jiangnan, is the model of the eastern culture which boasts a history of a thousand year and culture of Wu area.
